Call for submissions: creative expressions of community
Concepts of Independence will be hosting our 2016 Gala this Fall, where the theme is “A Growing Community.” Concepts has been growing all across New York State, with more and more Consumers signing up each day. The Concepts community has grown in number, and also has expanded to include a wider diversity of Consumers, Personal Assistants, family and friends. The ripple effect is that each Consumer grows in their own way with freedom and independence. In turn, they are helping their community to grow even more.

We are putting together a collection of art, stories, and more that expresses the idea of community – all created by the people of Concepts. Tell us creatively what “community” means to you. You can submit in any kind of art form you’d like. Some examples include (but are not limited to):

  • A photo of your favorite place to hang out in your community.
  • An essay of an interesting experience that you had.
  • A photograph of you or any Consumer out in the neighborhood, working and living.
  • A photo journal of your typical day. You can draw or paint something inspired by your day as well.
  • A haiku about you and your neighbors.
  • A poem reflecting your favorite things about your life.
  • A painting or drawing of your neighborhood.

We are accepting almost any form of printable art that you can imagine. If you’d like to participate, send your submissions to mtaylor@coiny.org by September 1, 2016. Or, you can fax to 888-557-5439, or you can mail to Meghan Taylor, Concepts of independence, 120 Wall St, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10005. We are accepting work from anyone in the Concepts community: Consumers, Personal Assistants, Surrogates/Designated Representatives, family, friends, and staff. All submissions will be reviewed by a committee, and will be published so long as it is appropriate. We are looking forward to seeing your artistic expressions!
